A server that sits between a client application, such as a Web browser, and a real server. It intercepts all requests to the real server to see if it can fulfill the requests itself. If not, it forwards the request to the real server.
Proxy servers have two main purposes:

Improve Performance: Proxy servers can dramatically improve performance for groups of users. This is because it saves the results of all requests for a certain amount of time. Consider the case where both user X and user Y access the World Wide Web through a proxy server. First user X requests a certain Web page, which we'll call Page 1. Sometime later, user Y requests the same page. Instead of forwarding the request to the Web server where Page 1 resides, which can be a time-consuming operation, the proxy server simply returns the Page 1 that it already fetched for user X. Since the proxy server is often on the same network as the user, this is a much faster operation. Real proxy servers support hundreds or thousands of users. The major online services such as America Online, MSN and Yahoo, for example, employ an array of proxy servers.
Filter Requests: Proxy servers can also be used to filter requests. For example, a company might use a proxy server to prevent its employees from accessing a specific set of Web sites.

Lenovo Thinkpad X200 Review

Lenovo has announced the launch of several new laptops in their IdeaPad and ThinkPad lines to coincide with the unveiling of Intel’s Centrino 2 platform earlier today. One of those is the new ThinkPad X200 ultra-thin laptop, which joins Apple’s MacBook Air and Lenovo’s own X300 as one of the lightest fully-functional laptops available today.
Lenovo’s heralded “rock solid” design? Check. An ample amount of ports stuffed into a lightweight package? Check. A price tag that’s on the good side of reasonable? Check. Laptop has just awarded Lenovo’s recently announced Lenovo Thinkpad X200 ultraportable an Editor’s Choice award after determining that what it has is likely what you’ll want. Reviewers deemed the travel-friendly machine an “excellent lightweight notebook for mobile professionals who demand the business essentials,” noting that the omission of an optical drive wasn’t really a deal-breaker for them.
The Lenovo Thinkpad X200 is the “Performance Model” and starts at 2.93lbs. It uses normal voltage processors. Lenovo estimates the X200 will provide 3.3-9.6 hours of battery life. On the other side, the X200s “Portability Model” with low voltage or ultra-low voltage CPU weighs from 2.47 pounds and runs estimated 4.5-13.3 hours on a single charge. The “Tablet Model” also uses Intel’s LV and ULV chips. It starts at 3.55lbs and should provide 3.3-11.1 hours of battery life.
The Lenovo Thinkpad X200 is a whole different animal than the 13.3-inch X300, which is optimized to be as thin and light as possible and has a low-voltage processor, built-in DVD burner, and a solid state drive and has an eye-popping sticker price of $3,225. The X200 doesn’t have an optical drive, but it does have full-speed Intel Core 2 Duo processors, an array of drive options and an optional docking solution.
The optical drive is the most glaring omission, although there was none with the X61. If an optical drive is really a must, the Lenovo Thinkpad X200 Ultrabase dock (which integrates an optical drive) is available for $219 through Lenovo. (Alternately, you can get a third-party USB external optical drive.) The array of ports isn’t going to blow you away, but you do have three USB ports and an SD card slot. A webcam and a fingerprint reader are nice touches, but the most compelling features are the wireless options.
It starts with internal WWAN connectivity, with your choice of AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint. The upgrade prices for an AT&T and a Verizon cellular modem are $80 and $130, respectively, although service plans are still on the pricey side. Because it’s one of the first Centrino 2 laptops, the Lenovo Thinkpad X200 runs the new Wi-Fi Link 5300 chipset. The 5300 is the higher-end version of two Centrino 2 Wi-Fi chips (the other being the 5100), sporting a larger antenna array and greater range than the previous Wi-Fi Link 4965AGN chipset.

Dell Studio 15 Review

The Dell Studio 15 and Studio 17 laptops do seem to be more than a figment of someone’s imagination — at least, according to a believable release posted up at BetaNews, which has since been pulled. Predictably, the former line features a 15-inch panel while the latter steps up to 17-inches, and both crews will be offered in a smattering of hues including black, grey, blue, green, pink, orange, purple and red. Prices on these units are set to start at $799, while you’ll find Intel’s Core 2 Duo alongside up to 4GB of RAM, upwards of 320GB of HDD space, an 8-in-1 multicard reader.

The Dell Studio 15styling is also a tribute to the XPS M1530. You might recognize the drop-down hinges, similar to the ones on the M1530 and the Lenovo IdeaPad Y510. It even has the same tapering design as the M1530, becoming thinner as you move toward the bezel. At 5.9 pounds, it’s a shade lighter than the 6.2-pound M1530, although the Apple MacBook Pro is still the undisputed 15-inch mainstream lightweight with its 5.3-pound frame. I’m surprised that Dell didn’t offer a 13-inch Studio, as it would appeal to mobile professionals.

Hp Pavilion Dv5t Review

What do you do when nearly every major notebook manufacturer has imitated the design of your best-selling consumer laptop? You give it a whole new look and add compelling new features, including an accelerometer to help protect data in case of a tumble. And with Intel’s next-generation Centrino 2 processor and chipset and Nvidia’s latest graphics card under the hood, the HP Pavilion dv5t (available in the July/August timeframe) backs up its sweet aesthetics with some serious horsepower.
The HP Pavilion dv5t includes the Intel Core 2 Duo 45nm processor at 2 - 2.8GHz, depending on model. There are also the new GMA X4500 integrated graphics, or one of the Nvidia’s dedicated GPUs - GeForce 9200M GS 256MB or GeForce 9600M GT 512MB. The laptop supports up to 4GB of DDR2 memory, up to 320GB of hard drive storage, and a DVD burner or Blu-Ray ROM. The 15.4″ display in this notebook has a resolution of 1280×800 or 1680×1050 pixels, depending on customer’s choice.
The reviewed model which includes the latest Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT dedicated GPU has an amazing gaming performance for a laptop. The system scored 3,937 points on 3DMark06 benchmark.“Such high numbers mean you can easily play a handful of 3D games with most of the effects enabled”, Laptop Mag says adding that the sound was impressive and that the notebook’s display has excellent horizontal and vertical viewing angles. However, the glossy screen show a lot of glare.
The HP Pavilion dv5t is still slightly overweight at 6.3 pounds, while the differences between it and the previous Pavilions are barely discernible from the exterior. The LED-backlit HP logo was about the only adjustment made to the lid, and it’s similar to the approach the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Penryn) took with its logo. The glossy-black finish, laminated over a decorative pattern—a process called in-mold decoration—resembles that of the system’s predecessor, the HP Pavilion dv9500t.
The HP Pavilion dv5t sports a redesign that makes other mainstream machines look old-fashioned by comparison and backs up its futuristic-chic appearance with fast performance. There’s more than enough oomph here for a smooth Vista experience, as well as for playing the latest 3D games. And with its sharp display and robust speakers, the dv5t doubles as a portable entertainment center. This is a worthy sequel to the dv6500t and one of our favorite 15.4-inch notebooks.

When Voodoo Evny 133 teamed up with HP they set out to make one of the sleekest and most innovative ultra portable notebooks out on the market and that is exactly what they have created. The Voodoo Envy may be more expensive(starting price $2,099) than its only counterpart the Mac Book Air, but what you receive in return is more ports, an amazing instant-on-mode, a replaceable battery and don’t forget the Voodoo allows you to customize the laptop to your heart’s content.
The Voodoo Envy 133 is a soon to be released ultra-slim laptop from HP that competes directly with the Apple Macbook Air. The Envy is a 0.7″ thick and weighs 3.43 lbs and, thus, is technically thinner than the Air; The Macbook Air has a tapered design with its thickness varying from 0.16″ to 0.76″, where the Envy uses all right-angles giving it a constant thickness. The Envy is built on a Centrino CPU with your choice of Intel Core 2 Duo SP7700 (1.8GHz) or SP7500 (1.6 GHz) with 4 MB L2 Cache, and 800 MHz FSB.
Voodoo’s $2,099, carbon fiber Envy 133 isn’t a gaming rig. It is, however, a 13.3-inch ultra-portable with LED-backlit display, 1,280 x 800 resolution, Intel GMA X3100 graphics, 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SP7700 processor, HDMI, 2x USB (1 doubles as eSATA) and hard disk or SSD option. It also features an instant-on Voodoo IOS mode that lets you surf the web, chat, look at photos, and make Skype calls without booting into Windows. Impressed yet? Well what if we told you that the power brick (and it’s definitely a brick!) doubles as a WiFi access point?
The Voodoo Evny 133 is the latest addition to the exclusive “laptops that fit into a manila envelope” club. Seen for the first time, it draws the same oohs and aahs as the MacBook Air. The Envy 133’s dimensions (9 by 12.7 by 0.7 inches, HWD) are thinner than those of the Air (8.9 by 12.8 by 0.7 inches, HWD) at its thickest part. Of course, the Air has a tapering design that becomes even thinner as you move toward the bezel, so neither one can proclaim itself the thinnest here.

Alienware Area-51 M15x Review

Alienware has officially declared about two new models of notebooks, Area-51 m15x and m17x, as “the most powerful notebooks from all existed”. The number of model name corresponds to the diagonal of display (15,4 and 17 inches), they are similar on many technical descriptions: both notebooks will be equipped with the Core 2 Duo Extreme processors, NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX video card, 667 MHz DDR2, writing Blu-ray-drive (in Area-51 m17x model or writing DVD-drive in m15).
Normally, a review like this would open with us mocking the name of the product. That’s because most laptops nowadays, especially in the popular gaming and subnotebook markets, have incredibly stupid names. They call themselves things which are far too easy to structure jokes around, like the MSI Wind, or they bombard you with numbers and dashes like the (deep breath) Rock Xtreme 770 X9000-8800. With this laptop though, that approach to an introduction just doesn’t work for two reasons
Since then little has changed on the notebook gaming front, as we are yet to see a product that can deliver an outstanding level of performance, or at least enough to match a moderately powerful gaming desktop PC. Then there is the issue of heat, which affects all notebook computers, but particularly those intended for gaming. And we have tested quite a few that suffer from stability issues for that reason. When Alienware introduced the Alienware Area-51 m15x we were obviously keen to check it out, while remaining skeptical at the same time
Design
Silver - and only silver, that’s the first thing you’ll notice with the Alienware Area-51 m15x. The case wasn’t something that impressed us much - and given Alienware’s reputation for edgy design (almost Giger-esque), we found the silver lid with obligatory blue-eyed alien head to be, well…boring. Having reviewed Alienware machines in the past, we were always fond of their blue exterior option. This new lid is a silver panel, with a seam starting from the bottom to two-thirds up the lid, where it’s broken by the ambiguous alien head. Granted, the texture and quality of the material used was spot on baby’s behind smooth, but also too plain for what were used to.
Flashy colors and custom paint jobs, once the sole domain of high-end gaming desktops, have been steadily creeping into notebook design for years. After review, NotebookReview said “The Dell Inspiron e1505 is a fairly run-of-the mill notebook for a bargain price, but it offers a few surprises. The 2 GHz Core Duo CPU is rockin’ fast. Even with this performance, battery life was impressive, and 5+ hours should be possible with the optional 9-cell battery. My only real gripe is with the screen. The slight shimmer, light leakage, and brightness that seems like it’s turned down half a notch make it fall behind other notebooks. Still, the screen is better than most bargain notebooks, and better than anything from a few years ago. It’s also very sharp and high resolution. This, along with the nice keyboard, makes for a positive ergonomic experience.”

Acer Aspire One A110X

Acer has released a new version fo the Aspire One laptop, this time with a solid black color and a 16GB SSD. A few weeks ago a black version of the Acer Aspire One A150 started to show up, but that model has a 160GB hard drive instead of a solid state disk. Aside from the solid state memory, the other thing that sets the new Acer Aspire One A110X apart from the A150 is the fact that it only appears to be available in Germany at the moment, where it’s selling for about 399 Euros.
In terms of specs, the Aspire One A110X sports the same specs as the Aspire One A110. You’d still get the same 1.6GHz Atom CPU, 1GB RAM, 8.9-inch LCD and the rest of the standard features of the original Aspire One. The Acer Aspire One A110X retails for around $509. The previous Aspire One models retails for $399 at Amazon right now. That’s the price you have to pay for an ultra-sleek, totally black Aspire One. Good thing that it’s only available in Germany and not in the US, otherwise I doubt if it will to us budget conscious folks.
We have already become accustomed with ASUS releasing different Eee PC models, such as those that have recently invaded the market and taken all the headlines in the process. Apparently, the consumer market is believed to be in need of several netbook systems that only differ ever so little in terms of performance and specifications.
Still, we do have to admit that netbooks have seriously impacted the portable PC market, especially this year, when Intel introduced its netbook-designed Atom processor. This fast growing segment of the market is expected to see even more products like this being released, especially since Intel is to upgrade its Atom CPU lineup, while competitors like VIA and AMD are also said to power some of the upcoming low-power, low-cost PCs.
It is powered by Intel’s Atom N270 1.6GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB SSD. Aspire One A110X Black features a 8.9-inch LED backlit LCD display, WiFi, Crystal Eye webcam, and a multi card reader.

'Paradise' is, as any fule kno, ancient Persian for garden - appropriate given the press release's florid prose. But there's nothing arboreal or floral about the CR's urban colors: sangria, cosmopolitan, dove and indigo - or red, pink, white and blue, as they're more commonly known.
